As a health plan, it’s important to encourage and empower your members to take an active role in their own healthcare. Member engagement keeps members happy and confident in their relationship with you, and it also prevents their health conditions from worsening. Both are important and will ultimately save money for members and your health plan. Here are three tips health plans can follow to encourage members to engage in their healthcare that will result in savings.

Get personal.

Show your members that you actually care about them and are paying attention to their individual needs. Instead of sharing generic, non-targeted information, consider personalizing your interactions with each member based on their specific situations. A personalized message can have a big impact on whether a member engages with it or not. Some ways that you can do this is to include customized resources for their particular conditions, sending the risks versus costs associated with a procedure, or helping them identify solutions to their needs. It has been predicted that digital interventions like this could reduce U.S. medical costs by as much as $175 billion to $220 billion annually.

Keep it simple.

You're busy. Your members are busy. Don’t make things more complicated than they need to be. Every point of communication with your members, from documents to resources to your website, should all be kept simple and easy to understand. The easier it is for members to navigate their experiences with you, the more engaged they will become. You could even go a step above and beyond for them by providing them with a patient advocacy service. Hiring a third-party service like ours can help take stress off of your members. It will guide them through difficult, confusing healthcare experiences. Plus, patient advocacy services can improve member retention, member satisfaction, and reduce costs.

Host learning events or reward programs.

When patients understand their health, they can make informed decisions, and are more likely to take an active role in their care. Knowing this, try providing your members with resources about their health conditions to empower them to manage their care. Assist your members with scheduling appointments by sending them reminders or links to make the appointment. Consider providing them with a resource that helps them find affordable medications. Another great idea would be to start a reward program to encourage your members to engage in their health. One example is Rally, which incentivizes members to partake in healthy activities for points to go towards rewards.

Final thoughts.

Stand out from your competitors by doing what few do: showing your members how committed you are to them. Think about what you would want out of your own health plan, and engage with your members as individuals. Keep interactions simple. Provide members with incentives to take part in their health. All these things will lead to cost savings for your members, and a financially happy member is a retained member for your health plan.
